[Solved] Failed to Install Windows (disk set to GPT or MBR partition) -

If the error message appears: “Windows could not be installed to the disk. An MBR (or GPT) partition table is used for the selected disk. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed on GPT disks ”, so read on below to understand how to fix it.

Here is an image showing the error just described, and which usually occurs when trying to install Windows on a partition:

When does the error message appear?

As seen before, this error message appears when trying to install Windows. Just take a look at the forums to understand that it is quite frequent. Here are some posts extracted from the forums:

I tried installing Windows 8 on my Macbook. I followed the instructions given by BootCamp, everything went smoothly until I was asked the Windows installer to select the hard drive. At this point I get the error: “Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On the EFI system, Windows can only be installed on GPT disks. " What can I do?

I get the following error when I try to install Windows from a USB. “Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is set to MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed on GPT disks. "...

If I try to install 64-bit Windows using an Intel motherboard, I get the error message “The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed on GPT disks. "...

I am trying to perform a clean install on Windows 10 64 bit on my laptop. I initially created a new partition, copied all my data there, then started doing the custom installation. I got the message: “Windows could not be installed to the disk. An MBR (or GPT) partition table is used for the selected disk. In EFI systems, Windows can only be installed on GPT disks "...

How to solve the problem?

Now that you know when the error message appears, we can try to figure out how to fix it. There are several ways to solve the problem, but the most effective way is convert MBR to GPT disk, as the error clearly states that “Windows can only be installed on GPT disks”. If you don't know how to do this conversion, I recommend using a program called AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional and its “Convert MBR to GPT” function.

You can download the free demo version of this program from the following link:

Support Windows 10/8/7 / Vista & XP

After installation you will see a screen like this:

To convert an MBR disk to GPT, the first thing to do is select the partition / disk to convert and right click on the option "Convert to GPT disk“, As shown in fig. below:

The next step is to confirm the operation by clicking on the button OK on the window that will appear:

Finally you will be able to preview (preview) the new format of the disc and if everything is as expected you can proceed with the conversion by clicking on the top left on APPLY

The disk will now be in GPT format and you will have no problem installing Windows on it.

Hi, I have to do this on my pc because I have W10 32bit and I would like to upgrade to the 64bit version. I can't make the switch if I don't convert the disk. Unfortunately I can't convert the disk because the OS is 32 bit. How can I solve?
