Why Disney+ might not work on all your devices

Why Disney+ might not work on all your devices

Disney + is aggressive on price and content, but not only. Mickey's firm doesn't mess with safety either. Its DRM policy, the technical measures taken to control and limit the misuse of cultural works, testifies to this. Today, most players in subscription streaming (Disney + included), use Widewine, Google's DRM, to prevent copying and illegal distribution of content.

But where its competitors are generally satisfied with basic protection, Disney goes further and applies a stricter policy. This is in any case what reports the Dutch developer Hans de Goede, user of the beta of the service in his country.

Widewine has three distinct levels of security. In general, only the first two are used by rights holders. The "L3" is the least restrictive, it only applies to the software part of the service and can be easily circumvented by expert hands. On the other hand, it's a different story with the "L1", more secure and integrated directly into the integrated circuits of your devices.

So far, the SVOD giants, Netflix and Prime Video in the lead, have all done almost the same thing: an L3 security level for basic quality content and L1 for Ultra High Definition. For 4K enthusiasts, this meant having a device equipped with L1 certification. Disney + goes even further by imposing the highest degree of security for its entire catalog, regardless of resolution. However, all devices are not yet compatible today, far from it.

Concretely, if your device only supports the Widevine L3, do not plan to use it to view the content of the future Disney platform. If you try, chances are you will run into the "Error Code 83" error message. A word of advice: before subscribing to Disney + when the service is launched in France in 2020, remember to check the compatibility of your devices with DRM Widewine L1.
