Update of 07/02/2018 with the solution and explanations from Bitdefender. Following the problem encountered by many users on the evening of February 6, 2018, Bitdefender was able to identify the cause of the problem causing the display of a critical error message on the vsserv.exe service of its security software. A solution is offered.
On a dedicated support page, the publisher explains that an update is the cause of the problem. It was quickly removed after the first feedback from users, while a new restoration update was put in place to fix the bug.
To implement the solution, users must use the Bitdefender icon present in the notification area of the Windows taskbar. A right-click on the latter gives access to the "update" entry. Then just wait 15 minutes and restart the computer.
If the Bitdefender service does not start after doing this, it is also possible to launch it manually by running the following command using CMD accessible via Windows search and then right-clicking > "Run as administrator": sc start vsserv

On the Bitdefender forum, users explain seeing the message "The Bitdefender Security Service has encountered a critical error". It seems to persist even after a restart and affects all machines running Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. On Twitter users are also asking for explanations while a solution posted on the CNET Spain forums is widely viewed and seems to solve this problem via software reinstallation.
According to the Bitdefender Twitter account, the technicians seem to have been informed of the situation and are looking for the origin of the problem. Ironically the day today celebrates "safer internet day". We have requested explanations from the publisher and we will update this article as soon as we have more information.
