Install a hard drive in an external enclosure

Install a hard drive in an external enclosure

Hard drives are not intended exclusively for mounting inside a computer. No, they can also be used in external boxes (see our comparison) in order to make an external hard drive yourself. The utility can be multiple: create a large capacity removable storage space, increase the storage capacity of your computer if it can no longer accommodate another hard drive or create a removable backup space.

In any case, it is possible to buy ready-made products, but which are often more expensive. Once again, do not be afraid, the handling is quite simple, the proof in pictures:

    | For this demonstration, we used an external box with a very classic assembly as well as a hard disk of the SATA type (for Serial ATA). | |

    | The first step is to open the outer case. To do this, simply unscrew the two screws on the back of the device. In our case, these are screws that can be unscrewed by hand. On other models it may be traditional screws (cruciform). Once the two screws have been removed, all you have to do is slide the front part of the case. |

    | We then find ourselves facing the cradle of the hard sisque. On our test model, a fan is present to cool the hard drive and prevent overheating. It is then necessary to accommodate the hard disk on the cradle then to connect the two cables of the box. The first, the largest, provides power to the hard drive while the second, the cable (in red), is the one through which the data will pass. |

    | At this stage, the hardest part is done, since all that remains is to screw the hard drive to the case (the screws are always provided). Some models offer screwless mounts, this can be practical. Once the hard drive is securely attached to the cradle, all you have to do is close the case properly and connect it to your computer to use it. | |
